Boots are essential for men in the fall and winter months — and they’re definitely not one of those wardrobe items that you can afford to skimp out on. (Trust us, come snowy, slushy season, you and your dry toes will be thanking us.)

A high quality, sharp pair of boots can not only enhance your fall looks, whether it’s a dress boot in the office or a classic Chelsea boot on a night out, but they are also one of the most practical pieces in your wardrobe as the weather starts to turn.

If you’re starting off October with a pair of boots that have seen better days — no, holes in your toe does not count as a “rugged look” — we are rounding up five of our favorite men’s boots styles for fall that will keep you well dressed and dry for years to come.

1. Combat boots

A great pair of leather combat boots should be a staple in man’s wardrobe because they are the perfect mix between fashion and practicality. Plus, they go with pretty much everything.

These Emporio Armani leather boots with a quilted leg and eagle logo are a high-fashion, rocker take on classic combat boots, but their lace-up fastening and treaded sole still give them an iconic, classic vibe.

2. Hiking boots

For the guy who is looking for something just as practical as a combat boot, but in a style more suited for day-to-day wear, a stylish outdoor hiking boot is the way to go. If you live in a cold, wet climate, look for a pair with a waterproof leather exterior, so you can keep snow and water from soaking your feet.

These Ugg men’s Seton TL Boots from Moosejaw are the best of fashion and function. The soft, cozy UGGpure™ wool lining keeps your feet toasty throughout the day and adds some nice detailing. Plus, with a 5.5 inch boot shaft, you can walk through mounds of snow without compromising your dry socks.

3. Dress boots

Whether you’re heading into the office or to dinner out on the town, a handsome pair of dress boots are essential. We are really loving the Chukka boot style in an updated suede fabric for the autumn months, as it adds a little warmth and detail to your outfit. “This boot style is super versatile,” said Jewel’s resident menswear expert, Gareth. “You can wear them to the office and then easily transfer them when you’re done and ready to hit the town.”

These Kenneth Cole Desert Suede Chukka Boot are one of our favorite styles for autumn, thanks to the great everyday silhouette in a mid-top height, and a gorgeous suede upper shaft. The flat laces and tonal stitching also add in some fashionable detailing.

4. Sport boots

If you consider yourself a true outdoorsman who is frequently braving the elements during the fall and winter months, you’re going to want to look for a sport boot that truly does it all. We’re talking waterproofing, slip-resistance, breathability and a comfortable fit.

One of our favorite options out there for a stylish pair of sport boots are these New Balance Composite Toe 989 boots. Most people typically think of New Balance when they need a great pair of sneakers rather than boots, but their footwear line has grown to include some really great, practical boot styles this season.

These 989 boots in particular were inspired by a traditional mid-cut hiker boot, the men’s 989 is perfect for the worker or outdoorsman who wants over-the-ankle protection and comfort when the day gets tough. Combined with the signature New Balance comfortable fit, these boots are designed to give all-day style and support to the most rugged outdoorsman.

5. Classic boots

Last, and certainly not least, our absolute favorite style of boots for the fall and winter months is a good ol’ classic Chelsea boot. These close-fitting, ankle-high boots are a staple style that can be paired with a casual look, or can be dressed up for a night out, making them a fashionable option that you don’t have to think about when it comes to styling.

One of our favorite versions of the Chelsea Boot this fall is these Hugo Boss Coventry suede Chelsea boots from Mr. Porter, which are cut from soft suede and lined in smooth leather. Made in Italy, the sides are elasticated and they’re equipped with pull tabs so you can easily get them on and off. The dark grey tone of this style is perfect paired with blue or black denim, or even lighter chinos — all signature items in a man’s wardrobe.
